Oregon State Newsletter - March & April 2012

Dear Catholic Daughters, Regents, Father Scott and local court chaplains,

( a message from Father Scott)
Dear Catholic Daughters:

By now all of you have heard about the good news that recently came out of Rome, about the appointment of Father Liam Cary, pastor of St. Mary's in Eugene, to become the new bishop for the Diocese of Baker. Although the parishioners of St. Marys will miss him they too must be happy that one of their own was raised to lead the flock in central and eastern Oregon.

When I arrived in Eugene in July of 1987, I met Liam. At that time, he was the janitor on our staff. I soon recognized there was something special about this man, that he was a man of deep prayer and had a true concern for the poor and needy. I told him one day that I felt he should return to the seminary and that we needed him among our ordained. About that time we started Friday adoration and later still, Perpetual Adoration for vocations to priesthood and religious life. Soon, he was sent to Rome, and when some of us were off to Medjugore one autumn, we went by way of the Eternal City to see him and the Holy Father. Liam was so gracious to show us around St. Peters and the Sistine Chapel.

I look forward to work with him and Catholic Daughters in the years to come.

Have a blessed Easter and pray for all the newly baptized and candidates who will soon come into the church on Holy Saturday. Remember the words of St. Augustine:"We are an Easter People and Alleluia is our song."

See you soon at the State Conference in Albany.

Father Scott

NATIONAL PROJECTS & CHARITIES
I am sure all the courts are aware of the five national projects; Disaster Relief, Smile Train, SOAR, Holy Cross Ministries & Habitat for Humanity. The national office is asking each court to contribute $20.00 each per project per year.

There are now eight national charities; North American College, Morality in the Media, Catholic Relief Service, Apostleship of the Sea, Covenant House, Mother Teresa, Tutwiler Clinic, and added at last year's national conference, The Laboure Society. The Laboure Society has established in 2003 and is based in Minnesota. They assist mostly women who are unable to enter religious formation programs because of financial difficulties.
The Laboure Society encourages vocations to religious communities. St. Catherine Laboure is the patroness of this society. The church desperately need religious vocations and this is an ideal charity to support. The national office is not requesting a set amount for each of the eight charities, but please give generously.

Pennies for the Benedictine Sisters:

Are you saving your pennies for the Benedictine Sisters of Mt. Angel?  We will be having our day of Recollection there in October.  They need to upgrade their sound system, so we have taken this on as a special project.  There will be a collection jar at the State conference, try to give generously.  I am sure they appreciate everything we can do for them.
